Saqqara Necropolis
Saqqara, located 40 km southwest of Cairo, is a significant cemetery in ancient Egyptian history. It is known as an open-air museum that showcases the entire history of ancient Egypt. The site is home to the burials of kings and noblemen from the first two dynasties, as well as the Step Pyramid of Djoser. The pyramids of important kings from the Fifth and Sixth Dynasties can also be found here, including the pyramid of Unas, which features the oldest decorated burial chamber with Pyramid Texts. Saqqara is also filled with tombs from different periods, such as the First Intermediate Period, Middle Kingdom, and New Kingdom. Notable among these is the tomb of Horemheb, a non-royal individual who became king. Another important monument in Saqqara is the Serapeum, where the Apis Bulls were buried. The Apis Bull was considered an incarnation of the god Ptah.
